IXth Generation #1 Review

Synopsis:

What happens when self-proclaimed gods become bored? Is eternal life worth the strife and war that characterize this dystopian society? Will Aphrodite IX, One of nine 'siblings' be able to stop her family’s wayward destruction or will her struggles reveal an even bigger threat that has been looming in the dark? This series brings together the technological and supernatural realms of the top cow universes in a fascinating way.

Pros:

- Matt Hawkins does a fantastic job of creating a world and story that can be enjoyed by both old and new readers alike.

- As the first issue progresses, Matt Hawkins focuses on a few key characters. This helps build an emotional attachment to those characters and an understanding of the world they populate. - Matt Hawkins connects the two sides of the top cow universes in an intriguing way which leaves you wanting to know more. - Stejpan Sejic shows his artistic skills with expressive facial features and body language. His work is both other-worldly and exciting. He is a master of depth and colour.

Cons: -If you have no prior knowledge of the other Top Cow series (Aphrodite IX and Cyber Force on the cybernetics side and The Darkness and Witch Blade on the supernatural side) it can seem a little overwhelming. Stick with it - you will be rewarded with an intriguing storyline as the pieces fall into place.

Overall: 8.5/10

I am a huge fan of the top cow universe so I came into this with high hopes, and I wasn't disappointed. Overall, the first issue is a fun read with beautiful art and a story that picks up as it progresses. The beginning is very dialog heavy, however it is also very interesting and helps set up this particular stories world. However, as stated earlier I could see this being a little overwhelming for people completely new to the Top Cow Universe. Take it slow and read it for what it is, a lot of back story and set up on a few pages, it'll all click into place once Aphrodite IX meets her siblings on the battle field. The ending leaves you interested and wanting to know more. This story is full of potential and I am happily waiting for the next issue to arrive. IXth Generation Issue #2 will be out February 18th 2015.
