Quantum and Woody Must Die! #1 Review

The Facts

  • This 4 part mini-series is based off the original Quantum and Woody series. However, you don't really need to have read the earlier stories.

  • Quantum and Woody are polar opposites, a dynamic, (adopted) brotherly duo that shouldn't work. Yet, somehow they do and everyone loves them for it.

  • The first issue is written by returning writer James Asmus with artwork by Steve Lieber.

Pros

  • This comic is fun! If you are looking for a serious read that works through intense issues, this isn't for you.

  • James Asmus keeps the dynamic duos story action packed and completely ridiculous. The storyline is fast paced from beginning to end. The witty banter and references, juvenile jokes, and questionable heroics are non-stop and will leave you chuckling to yourself.

  • Steve Lieber’s artwork lends itself perfectly to the absurdity of the story. He has great movement in his work and he somehow always manages to capture Woody’s smug-ass demeanor - even from far away. Lieber’s art is as fast paced and funny as Asmus’s storytelling- making these two excellent collaborators.

  • I have to give a shout out to Dave Lanphear, the letterer of this comic for his use of sounds effects and emoticons within the writing; it's always nice to see a new way around swearing in comics.

Cons

  • The Domino Twins were lacking in depth and I did not find them as interesting as I was hoping too. There is potential there and I am hoping they will live up to my expectations in later issues.

  • There isn't a clear time frame from one scene to the next at the beginning. This makes the early stages of the story feel a little disjointed. However, as the issue continues you work it out fast enough.

  • The art work doesn't always have the most precise line work. In my opinion, the style suits this comic, but I know it’s a pet peeve of some people.

Overall: 8/10

  • Honestly, you have to come into this comic knowing what it is, a wacky roller-coaster ride, so with that in mind I really liked this comic.
